All coping with their own trials and tribulations but caught up in something beyond their control. Something that’ll be identifiable to the readers. I get sick of the kind of clichéd characters who populate horror and fantasy novels so I always try to write about real people with real problems. But the only guarantee I make is that it will entertain you. Anyone who’s never read one will be faced with the kind of book they’ve never encountered before. I loved the old Hammer films of the 60’s so this is a kind of homage to them but with a modern day angle.Īnyone who’s read my other books will know what to expect. All of it done at the usual breakneck pace that’s become something of a trade mark for me. I wanted to mix this up with what looks like a traditional horror and crime story and then, as I always do, give it a twist. I also wanted to do a book that, in these days of political correctness gone mad, challenged people’s views of something as contentious as race relations and racism. However, if you can frighten the hell out of readers while you’re entertaining them then that’s even better. I’ve believed that for twenty five years and I still do. The only reason to write a book is to entertain. On the subject of Unmarked Graves, Shaun says: “.how vain a tabernacle is man.” (Metaphor)īarrie uses this metaphor to describe how the reader might expect Hook to act while walking on the deck of his ship after capturing Wendy and the Lost Boys. She is not the literal mother to the Lost Boys, but she assumes the role, and their calling her their mother makes it so. When Wendy arrives in Never Land, the Lost Boys ask her to be their mother, and she becomes a metaphorical stand-in for mothers in general. She gives him a thimble, calling it a kiss, and an actual kiss gets referred to as a thimble. Peter does not know what a kiss is, and thinks that it is a physical object, so when Wendy offers to give him a kiss, he holds out his hand as if waiting for her to give him something. This metaphor is the result of a misunderstanding. His fascinating stories lead de Blasi more deeply inside the soul of Tuscany. They are befriended by the mesmeric Barlozzo, a self-styled village chieftain. Their routines are not that different from those of villagers centuries earlier. We accompany the couple as they harvest grapes, gather chestnuts, forage for wild mushrooms, and climb trees in the cold of December to pick olives, one by one. In this patch of earth where Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio collide, there is much to feed de Blasi's two passions-food and love. They dwell among two hundred villagers, ancient olive groves, and hot Etruscan springs. In search of the rhythms of country living, the couple moves to a barely renovated former stable in Tuscany with no phone, no central heating, and something resembling a playhouse kitchen. American chef Marlena de Blasi and her Venetian husband, Fernando, married rather late in life. 'Exciting, empowering and un-put-downable. The diction in this book calls forth vivid imagery in the reader’s mind, and I enjoyed the journey of Selune realizing she does not have to live her life on fear despite the trauma she has endured.
